Functional Capacity Assessments
What is a Functional Capacity Assessment?
A Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) is a comprehensive assessment of how a child or young person manages everyday activities, routines and participation. It identifies strengths, support needs and practical strategies to promote independence and meaningful involvement at home, school and in the community.
What does a FCA assess?
An Occupational Therapist may assess areas including:
- Self-care, such as dressing, bathing, toileting and eating
- Mobility and safety at home, school and in the community
- Communication and social interaction
- Learning and participation in education
- Play, recreation and community activities
- Domestic tasks, routines and developing independence
The assessment is tailored to the child’s age, developmental stage and individual circumstances. It may include observation, discussions with the child and family, and standardised assessment tools.
How can a FCA help?
An FCA provides a clear picture of a child’s current abilities and support needs. It can help to:
- Set meaningful goals for independence and participation
- Review whether current supports remain appropriate
- Identify strategies, equipment or environmental changes
- Inform NDIS applications and plan reviews
- Support recommendations for therapy and assistance
What Happens After the Assessment?
Following the assessment, you will receive a detailed report outlining strengths, challenges, functional impacts and recommendations. This can be shared with the NDIS, school and other members of the child’s support team.
When Should You Consider a FCA?
You may benefit from a FCA if your child/teenager:
- Is preparing for an NDIS application or plan review
- Is moving between services or educational settings
- Has changing support needs or levels of independence
- Requires new or updated equipment
- Is experiencing changes in daily functioning
- Needs their goals and supports reviewed
Our Occupational Therapists work closely with children, young people and their families to understand functional needs and develop practical, individualised recommendations.
